The restoration of vintage radial engines, specifically the Wright R-1820 series, is a study in high-integrity tolerances and material science. Document here is the technical overhaul of WWII-era aviation assets via the rigorous application of AMS (Aerospace Material Specifications) and historical OEM standards. Achieving a full TBO (Time Between Overhaul) requires more than a visual refresh; it demands the precise management of critical engine timing, cylinder compression ratios, and internal lubrication paths that keep these 1,200-horsepower machines flight-ready.
This is the infrastructure of preservation: where heritage meets the uncompromising reality of mechanical physics.

Legacy & Pearls
Rosie Buser & the Taking off of a Legacy Project by her daughter in the background
I never knew my dad was a war hero growing up. Mom (who did not love the memory of his time away from her) turned his military uniform into a snowsuit. It was really good looking with those gold buttons.
I have the patch that was sewn into his jacket. It said in Chinese, "I am an American" so that he would receive sanctuary if he got shot down on the long missions flying The Hump.
While others enjoyed receiving medals of honor, dad just wanted to go home. We found his medals stored away. He displayed none of them. The story of his time in the service came out slowly and in pieces.
In honor of my dad's service, I signed up each my children to take flying lesson when they were teenagers. For one of my daughters, this led to a lifelong legacy project of which is explained in the following.
Signing off,
Rosie Buser, B.S.Ed., M.S.T, M.S.ELPA, Ed.S., ABD PhD
About Rosie
Rosie Buser is the daughter of Arthur Buser, Sr. and the mother of 3 children. She has taught on 4 continents and in 5 countries. Wedding Day
Arthur Buser, Senior in his military uniform for wedding to Louise née Arendt
Arthur Buser, Sr. was a solider out of California, USA during WWII. He was in the air-force when it was still part of the army. He was declared killed in action (KIA) when his plane went down behind enemy lines. The military buried him without a body; but he had not died...
Arthur carried out the injured. He hid everyone when the enemy came and took everything they could. The men continued to hide, but Arthur had a screwdriver (with a wooden, red handle) he managed to put in his pocket in the rush: and that made all the difference! Sometime later Arthur did what was needed doing & was in a position to make contact. The military didn’t tell his wife they heard from him. Arthur came home and she found out he was alive when he knocked on the farmhouse door of his mother-in-law where is wife and newborn son were staying.
Arthur & his wife had a baby and named her Rosie.
He honored his family legacy and celebrated Rosie the Riveter, the cultural icon representing the women who riveted the aircraft that kept him safe during the war.
Rosie the Riveter had riveted on the plane saved Arthur's life. I am Rosie's daughter &...
I had the honor of a legacy project, restoring the aircraft that saved my grandfather Arthur's life, including riveting like a Rosie.
So, my name in the hangar became...
"daughter of Rosie"

The pro-bono stewardship and technical labor was an honor to work with highly-skilled men and preserve the knowledge that came at great sacrifices from the Greatest Generation.
I grew up sitting on Grandpa's lap, and with that triangular folded flag, a legacy of the funeral that was repeated decades later. Much happier with the legacy of Grandpa singing, "How Great Thou Art" in a booming bass.
Mom got me my first pilot's log book. I had traveled the world already, visiting family and going on adventures mom had planned, so I was not expecting to find a ride in a Cessna much different from a commercial flight. However, it profoundly shifted my life.
My mom's passion for learning and adventurous spirit enabled me to tackle a field far outside of my background. While the era of the Rosies celebrated women on the flight line, modern aviation has pivoted into a heavily male-dominated space. I navigated this by being highly strategic — finding my place in institutional governance without breaking the boys' club.
A labor of love!
Legacy.
Honored to be honored.

Cotter pins (often called split pins or cotter keys) are simple, versatile metal fasteners with two tines used to lock other components—like castle nuts, clevis pins, or axles—in place. They prevent parts from sliding off or backing out under vibration.

Basler "DC-3s" (officially known as the Basler BT-67) are highly modified, turbine-powered remanufactures of the legendary World War II-era Douglas DC-3/C-47 airframe. Based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Basler Turbo Conversions strips these classic aircraft to their bare metal and completely modernizes them for heavy-duty commercial and specialized utility operations worldwide--really awesome to tour.

"When She Chose Courage Over Comfort"
From Interview of an Award for Rosie's Daughter as an Influential Woman
Restoring a century-old warbird was a labor of love; test-flying it was my act of courage.
As I prepped to co-pilot, the ground crew wheeled out 6 fire extinguishers. SIX.
EACH taller than me!
(½ joke, because Avgas burns HOT, a fire extinguisher would do nothing except maybe add to an explosion if this went wrong)
½ serious: this was dangerous.
We had restored it ourselves... The warbird was built intended to last 100 hours in flight and there we were, about 100 years later, asking it to give more.
As I climbed into the cockpit, heart in my throat, I realized courage isn't the absence of risk; it's the decision that the goal is worth it. I stepped away from the safety of the runway and chose to trust the machine we rebuilt with our own hands.
Most exhilarating–and vibration heavy–flight of my life.
